Metairie, La. — The talk last past off-season was about just how awful the Saints defense was the last couple of decades. Through coaching camp, the participants have been adamant that they had been a much improved device, but people remained doubtful. From the event there have been glimpses of just how good they could be, but starting the season with two losses didn’t help their situation. Now heading to week 11, and past the midway point of the season, everybody outside of the locker area is eventually thinking the hype– they are much improved.
The Saints have rattled-off 7-straight wins mainly in part because of how well the defense has performed. Not only have they kept their competitors from the endzone until the 4th quarter of the previous 3 matches, but most recently against the Bills, they held Buffalo to less than 200 total yards of offense. Through 9 matches, the Saints are tied for 8th in the league with 10 interceptions, tied for 10th in the league with 25 sacks, and also so are tied for 5th in scoring defense (18.3 ppg)– a drastic improvement from becoming ranked 31st in scoring defense (28.4 ppg) a year ago.
When asked about the deadline for enhancing his defensive unit because the previous time they played with the Redskins in 2015, Head Coach Sean Payton stated there was not an specific deadline– he just knew it needed to occur shortly.
“I really don’t know if there had been a ‘by here we should be. .'” Payton stated. “Clearly we knew we had to improve if we’re going to be prosperous. So there was not a time or due date. It was barbarous. We have to get much better. And even in the beginning of this year it was not good enough. The confidence comes a little bit from doing it. I thought Carolina was a major match, then going on the road to London for a week as a staff and then playing well on the market. Then you start thinking and obtaining some confidence”
