A hundred decades back, in Fatima, Portugal, two kids were believed to have received the first of many visions of the Virgin Mary while they were tending their family’s sheep. The kids, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, died young, victims of the influenza epidemic that was Europe, but their town became a gathering place for countless pilgrims. On Saturday, both were canonized by Pope Francis in a large outdoor mass in Fatima, getting the most youthful saints in background.
